Crafting and testing a recipe
Once we hit upon an organic substance that appears to stimulate the antenna, we determine the chemical structure of that scent.
After it's broken down, our organic chemists replicate the chemical compounds that caused that antenna jolt. Amid a multitude of beakers and flasks, burners and mixers, they will create a recipe we can use for field testing.
At this point, a critical piece of information is still unknown about the scent to which the insect responded. Was the smell attractive to the insect, or did the needle spike represent a repellent reaction? Those are the questions that our field testers will set out to answer.
