Eastern, Western, or Reusable: Which Yellowjacket Trap Do You Need?

When you’re shopping for a yellowjacket trap, “Eastern” and “Western” can look like small details in a long product name. They’re worth checking before you order.

RESCUE! Disposable Yellowjacket Traps come in two regional formulas. Choose the formula for the location where you’ll use the trap. The RESCUE! Reusable Yellowjacket Trap is a refillable option sold nationwide. Here’s how to choose between them.

Eastern or Western: Which Disposable Yellowjacket Trap Do You Need?

Different parts of the country have different mixes of yellowjacket species. Those species do not all respond to the same attractant, which is why RESCUE! makes two formulas for its Disposable Yellowjacket Trap.

Use the state where you plan to hang the trap to select your formula. The following guide follows the RESCUE! regional selection map:

RESCUE! Disposable Yellowjacket Trap Formulas by State
Formula Where to Use It
Western Formula
(YJTD-W)
Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
Eastern Formula
(YJTD-E)
All other U.S. states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

When ordering from an online retailer, check the formula before you buy. Both versions may appear in search results. If you’re taking a trap on a camping trip or vacation, choose for your destination.

The regional formulas account for differences in yellowjacket species, but species ranges can overlap. Your location helps guide your choice; local species and conditions can still affect catches.

Disposable or Reusable: What Changes?

Once you’ve checked the regional formula, consider how you want to maintain the trap. The main practical difference is whether you replace the entire trap or empty it and replace its attractant.

Disposable Yellowjacket Trap

RESCUE! Disposable Yellowjacket Trap, Western Formula. The RESCUE! Disposable Yellowjacket Trap includes its attractant. Add water to the fill line and hang the trap outdoors, following the package directions.

This style suits shoppers who prefer to discard the entire trap instead of emptying and refilling it. Wait until all captured yellowjackets are dead, then dispose of the trap according to its label instructions.

Choose the Eastern or Western Formula using the state guide above.

Reusable Yellowjacket Trap

RESCUE! Reusable Yellowjacket Trap and packaging. The RESCUE! Reusable Yellowjacket Trap is sold nationwide without separate Eastern and Western versions. You keep the trap and replace its attractant as directed.

Refill options include liquid yellowjacket attractant refills and yellowjacket attractant cartridges. Follow the setup and replacement instructions for the refill you choose.

Choose this style if you prefer to empty and reuse your trap. Make sure all captured yellowjackets are dead before opening it, and follow the label precautions when handling and maintaining it.

Why Isn’t My Yellowjacket Trap Catching Anything?

If your trap isn’t catching yellowjackets, start by checking the insect, setup, and placement:

  • Confirm what you’re seeing. These traps target yellowjackets, not paper wasps. Our yellowjacket and wasp identification guide can help you tell them apart.
  • Review the setup. For a Disposable Trap, check the regional formula and water level against the package directions. For a Reusable Trap, follow the instructions and replacement schedule for its attractant.
  • Check the location. Both traps are for outdoor use. Hang them at least 20 feet away from areas where people gather, and follow the placement directions and precautions on the label.
  • Consider local conditions. Yellowjacket species, seasonal activity, weather, and competing food sources can affect catches.

If your trap hasn’t caught yellowjackets after 24–48 hours, try another location that meets the package directions. If you still need help, contact the RESCUE! team with your location, trap version, and a description of where it’s hanging.
