Supplies needed to set up the Fly Bucket Top

How To Set It Up

To begin, set aside the Fly Bucket Top and the lid from your fly trap. Add the lure pouch to the trap and add water to the fill line, activating the lure. Holding the fly trap firmly in one hand, screw Fly Bucket Top onto the activated fly trap bottle. Next, screw the lid from the fly trap onto the threaded opening on the top of Fly Bucket Top. Install Fly Bucket Top onto your standard 5-Gallon bucket, applying gentle pressure to ensure a secure friction fit. Hold the trap by the bucket or bucket handle when moving to your desired location. Do not hang the trap, and do not hold it by the lid. Secure the trap in a dry, sheltered area away from wind and animals. Your bucket is now ready to start catching flies!

Frequently Asked Questions

Won’t the flies just get caught in the trap?

Some flies will be caught in the trap, but larger openings above the fly trap allow flies to be diverted into the bucket. Most of the flies will be caught in the bucket. When the trap becomes full or dries out, it’s time to add a fresh lure refill.

Can I add water to the bucket and add a lure packet to the water?

We don’t recommend this. The bucket’s increased water surface area (compared to the smaller trap canisters) reduces the lure’s overall effectiveness.

Can I feed the flies to my chickens?

Flies caught in the bucket can be fed to chickens or composted. We do not recommend feeding the flies caught in the trap itself to your chickens.

Will Fly Bucket Top fit on my bucket?

We designed Fly Bucket Top to fit securely on most standard 5-gallon buckets you might find at a hardware store, although we can’t guarantee that it will fit every 5-gallon bucket. For best results, we recommend using a new bucket, as older buckets have a tendency to warp, which will affect the way the lid fits.
