Staying Power: Stephanie

In our blog series on the "staying power" of longtime RESCUE! employees, we turn the spotlight on Stephanie. As our company spokesperson, she's used to being in front of the camera with the media and in turn spotlighting all the things that make us special.

Stephanie Cates, Director of Marketing & Communications for RESCUE!What is your title? Director of Marketing & Communications.

Since you've been at RESCUE!, have your job responsibilities changed? Yes; when I started we were a much smaller company and each of us wore several hats out of necessity. I spent some time in customer service -- entering product orders and talking to consumers, sales reps and retailers on the phone. It gave me an appreciation for other people on the front lines, and I got to know our products inside and out.

What do you enjoy about your job? I believe in our company and our products, so I love waving the RESCUE! flag -- reaching out to media, telling our stories, and introducing people to our products. We have something special here and I want to share it with everyone who will listen, watch or read!

What do you like about the company? We have genuine respect and compassion for each other, while pushing each other to be at our best. The standards are high, but so is the camaraderie.

When you were first hired, did you ever think you’d be at RESCUE! this long? I had no idea I would be here this long, but I did know we were on the verge of significant growth, with the advent of big-box home improvement stores and HGTV/Home & Garden Television gaining popularity on cable. I could also see that RESCUE! had carved out a unique and valuable niche as consumers became more "green". Most people want to be environmentally friendly, but without sacrificing effectiveness. Our products allow them to have both.

What kind of changes have you seen at RESCUE! over the time you’ve been here? So many changes! When I started, our world headquarters was an old paint store. The offices were in front and the production line was in the back.  Now we fill nearly two buildings in the Spokane Industrial Park. A lot of the jobs we used to outsource, like our plastic injection molding, are now done in-house. Twenty-three years ago we had fewer products and a much smaller workforce. Since I've been here, we've introduced a number of new additions not only to the RESCUE! family of products, but also to our own family of employees. And the internet of course changed our business and gave us more options for marketing, as we're able to share content and reach the consumer directly in a multitude of ways -- not just through mass-media.

What makes RESCUE! a special place to work? We have a team of people who are not only exceptionally good at what they do – they have integrity. That integrity comes from the top and permeates our culture. It not only makes us better at our jobs... it also makes us better people.
